During the making of this bronze piece, Henry aspired to produce a piece that would be divided into three separate components. At first glance, the work appears to be two regular hands holding a heart. However, ‘Heart, Hands and Soul’ went through a series of changes including the removal of the thumbs and the breakdown of skin.
Our thumbs help us perform most of our tasks with ease. Also, having a left and a right hand significantly reduces our performance struggle. This piece undergoes the battle of being thumbless; the strain of having to carry without ease and focuses only on the usage of two right hands.
The heart consists of a drilled hole and is supported by hands that are not stable. In this work, the heart signifies fragility, while the hands represent clumsiness and the lack of baring without being ready.
